May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and JACL-DC acknowledges the wide range of events honoring this observance. On May 8, President Barack Obama addressed the 18th Annual Gala Awards Dinner for the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies. In his speech, the President spoke warmly of his personal ties to the API community and offered a posthumous salute to Gordon Hirabayashi. Daphne Kwok, chairperson for the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, reflected in a May 2 White House blog post on the milestones that will shape the future of the API community. And DC’s Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs has posted a calendar of events offering information and celebrations throughout the month.
